Riding / Starting

Start engine

Riding Idle mode indicator light lights up.

Riding Idle mode appears on the display.

NOTICE You cannot start the motorcycle with the side stand extended and a gear engaged. The engine will switch itself off if you start it with the gearbox in neutral and then engage a gear before retracting the side stand.

NOTICE If the throttle grip is operated too vigorously, the engine will not start or the current to the starter motor will be interrupted. Hold the throttle grip closed or only operate it gently.

Riding Switch is in operation mode.

Pre-Ride-Check

The instrument cluster runs a test of the warning and indicator lights and the display, known as the Pre-Ride-Check, after the ignition has been switched on.

The test is aborted if you start the engine before it completes.

Phase 1

Riding

"General" warning light 1 lights up red.

The indicator lights 2 light up.

The last active display 3 is shown on the screen.

The rpm redline warning 4 lights up.

The warning lights 5 light up.

Phase 2

"General" warning light 1 changes from red to yellow.

Phase 3

The warning and indicator lights and the rpm redline warning go out, or they assume operational status.

The malfunction indicator lamp only goes out after 15 seconds.

If servicing is due, this is shown briefly on the screen.

If one of the warning or indicator lights does not light up:

WARNING Faulty warning lights

No indication of malfunctions

 

ABS self-diagnosis

BMW Motorrad Integral ABS performs self-diagnosis to ensure its operability. Self-diagnosis starts automatically when you switch on the ignition.

Phase 1

Riding  ABS telltale and warning light flashes.

Phase 2

Riding ABS telltale and warning light flashes.

ABS self-diagnosis completed

If an indicator showing an ABS fault appears when ABS self-diagnosis completes:

Engine Until the running-in check (first inspection), vary the throttle opening and engine-speed range frequently; avoid riding at constant engine rpm for prolonged periods. Try to do most of your riding during this initial period on twisting, fairly hilly roads. Comply with the rpm limits for running in. Note the mileage after which the running-in check should be carried out.
